Is Your Car Ready for the Road?

Since Spring, when COVID-19 changed the way millions of Americans go about daily life, many Americans have ‘garaged' their vehicles. But after months of sitting or little use, you must consider—is your car ready for the road?

As the holiday season continues, many people will travel. Because of ongoing concerns about health and safety, road trips seem to be an increasingly common way of moving around. If you are planning to go on a road trip, you need to make sure your car is ready for the road.

Tips for Getting Your Car Ready for the Road

Here are some tips for getting your car ready for the road, whether you are traveling near or far:

  • Before traveling, plan your route, and check the weather at your destination.
  • If it looks like you will drive through inclement weather, make sure your vehicle is adequately equipped. This includes having appropriate tires, windshield wipers, a snow shovel, or even some cat litter or sand for traction.
  • If you are going to an area where there has been flooding or heavy rainfall, make sure you have an alternate route planned. Never drive on a flooded road. It only takes six inches of water to stall your vehicle or cause a loss of control.

Before you hit the road, make sure your car is ready by doing the following:

  • Check antifreeze levels
  • Check the battery and ignition systems
  • Make sure your fuel and air filters are clean
  • Get an oil change
  • Check that your head, tail, and hazard lights are working properly
  • Check that your heater and defroster are working properly

When you are traveling, there is no way to anticipate an emergency or unforeseen event. That's why you should also pack an emergency supply kit in your car. Include these items to ensure your entire party is safe and content:

  • First Aid kit
  • Cell phone charger and extra battery
  • Blankets
  • Bottled water
  • Snacks
  • Flares or reflective triangles

These tips can ensure your car—and you—are ready for the road.
